Julia Autio, music pedagogue and trainee in Villa Karo
I have been lucky to follow the work of one real artist from Grand-Popo who is currently living in Salo, Finland. His name is Gildas Houessou but he uses GLDS as his stage name. The first time I had a chance to hear a few songs from his album ‘Grand-Popo-vi’ was in Ouidah the 10th of January. I already realized that what I saw on the stage was pure enjoyment and one big love of music.
Then a few weeks later I wanted to see his concert in Comé and there I really didn’t refuse to dance. Trying to shake my chest and shoulders like a real African dancer I might have looked more silly than authentic but I really had a good time in Comé! Even though the electricity went off during the concert, the rhythm continued thanks to the djembes, and the artist took advantage of the situation by singing acoustically. The flashlights lit the stage and the crowd.

One week later Gildas had a concert again, this time in Villa Karo, Grand-Popo. The concert was one of the biggest for the artist and the public even had the honour to hear two national hymns, Finnish and Beninese! To boot, the director of Villa Karo, Kwassi Akpladokou, gave a speech on the stage! Such a great evening full of love and music and not to forget that this concert was free of charge for everyone as it is a style in Villa Karo’s events.
At St. Valentine’s day there was still another surprise to come in Agoué. A group of Finnish musicians came to play with Gildas and their performance was like a refreshing breeze to the ears! Eight young talents playing African rhythms with djembes and congas acoustically! Such great solos and mutual understanding in the playing! Congratulations Heviosso, it was wonderful!
Later on, there was still Gildas’s concert and he didn’t let the public down this time either. A great atmosphere in the concert place full of people singing along with the artist, and Gildas didn’t loose his energy even in the end. If something should be criticized, the volume was way too loud for my ears.
Many many thanks to Gildas and his group for letting us enjoy his music! You shouldn’t miss this man’s concerts in Finland either!

Linda Söderholm, Essi Ojanperä & Žiga Gerbec järjestivät Villa Karossa breakdance-battlen. Länsi-Afrikan tanssiskene näkyy myös Lindan ja Essin luomalla Hip Hop Mosaic -sivustolla ja B-girl Supa F-Lindan säännölliset breakdance-treenit toivat Grand-Popo Breakersit yhteen.
Lissa Gbassaan syntyi uusi graffiti à la Linda & Essi.
Essin Ojanperän projekti oli tuottaa rap-musiikkivideo Taiteen syntymäpäiville. Videota kuvattiin jatkuvasti ja hulluimmatkin ideat otettiin käyttöön. Janne Halonen loi musiikin videoon.
Janne Halonen kulki Grand-Popossa ja Beninissä kuin kala vedessä. Hän ei ollut Villa Karossa ensimmäistä ja tuskin viimeistäkään kertaa. Helsinki-Cotonou Ensemble ja yhteistyö Noël Saïzonoun kanssa tuottaa makeita hedelmiä!

Matti ”Le Vieux” Kurkela osallistui ENVIRO-projektiin tekemällä kierrätystaideteoksen Mami Wata, joka sijaitsee Lissa Gbassan ulkoseinällä.
Noëlin djembe-tunneilla Matti-Duo oli tuttu näky eivätkä Matit malttaneet olla viemättä djembejä Suomeen. Näin Matti Tanskanen puhuu omasta työstään: Valokuvausprojektini ideana oli toteuttaa mahdollisimman kevyt ja hauska valokuvakokonaisuus yhdessä Grand-Popon asukkaiden kanssa. Valokuvaajana ensisijainen lähtökohtanani on usein vallitseva todellisuus. Tarkoituksenani ei ole kuitenkaan tallentaa objektiivisesti aikaa ja paikkaa, vaan pikemminkin ilmentää henkilökohtaista kokemustani. Valokuvat muodostavat yhdessä oman kuvitteellisen todellisuutensa, joka sijoittuu jonnekin dokumentin ja fiktion sumuisille rajamaille.
Vodun sai uudet kasvot, kun Ilona Silenti luonnosteli näkemyksensä jumalista, hengistä ja paikallisista. Villa Karossa nähtiin pienoisnäyttely ruokasalissa ennen hänen paluuta Suomeen, ja Suomessa teoksia nähtiin TILA-Galleriassa 7.-25.5.

Tuomas Uusheimon kamera päätyi yhdeksi yöksi Amerikan suurlähetystöön. Residenssistä Tuomas palasi Suomeen Marokon kautta, missä hän kuvasi meteoriitteja.

Roy Mänttäri saapui Beniniin tutustumaan paikalliseen rakennuskulttuuriin. Royn sanoin, kaikki oli hienompaa, mukavampaa ja ihanampaa, mitä hän oli osannut odottaa.

Ervi Sirén ohjasi upean soolotanssin ”Neljän tarinan vuori” Villa Karossa togolaiselle tanssijalle, Estelle Folille. Lavastajana toimi Johanna Havimäki ja koreografin assistenttina paikallinen kalastaja Donald Agbodjakin Estellen kanssa yhteistyö jatkui vielä uudemmankin kerran ja kukaties lisää jatkoa seuraa…
Perttu Saksa voitti Fotofinlandia-palkinnon juuri ennen Beninin matkaansa. Residenssiaikanaan hän teki enemmän töitä kuin koskaan aikaisemmin samassa ajassa. Yhteistyössä Ervin ja paikallisen tanssijan Dick Agbodjakinin kanssa syntyi video Dick Dancing.
Johana ”Masculin” Nyrhinen, instrumenttirakentaja ja multi-nikkari, jonka työpajoissa rakentui muoviputkesta pitkähuiluja ja tiikistä kanteleita. Juhana myös korjasi paikallisten kitaroita, stipendiaatin viulun ja veisti Edoh-puutarhurille kaksoisnuket.
Johanna kangaspuiden ääressä, Donald apuna ja Ervi katsojana. Taustalla Juhana, Salabo, Adja ja Johnny.
Johana ”Féminin” Havimäki rakensi ensitöikseen matkakangaspuut ja kutoi muoviroskasta maton. Kangaspuut ja matto olivat esillä ENVIRO-viikonloppuna Villa Karossa. Johanna myös rakensi Ervin ja Estellen tanssiesitykseen lavasteet.

Viulisti Laura Kokon agenda oli osa Hei me sävelletään! –projektia yhdessä Lahti Sinfonian kanssa. Grand-Popon koululaiset tutustuivat viuluun ja kanteleeseen, suomalaiseen kansanmusiikkiin sävelsivät ja saivat lahjoituksena soittimia koululle.
Tanja ”Tata Tatoué” Is istui auringossa ja työsti lastenkirjaansa rohkeilla värivalinnoilla ja uusilla muodoilla.
Henri Hagmanin sivellin kulki akvarellipaperilla lähes lakkaamatta. Töiden määrä kasvoi päivä päivältä ja värit tanssivat, pyörivät ja kietoutuivat toisiinsa paperilla. Aino Suonion rauhallinen luonne ja vakaat kädet järjestelivät pienen pieniä hama-helmiä ruudukkoon, joista syntyi kauniita korvakoruja. Välillä he kerkesivät kuitenkin myös rentoutua puutarhassa.
Työpari Anniina Mustalahti ja Veera Pitkänen keräsivät ahkerasti tietoa ja ymmärrystä paikallisesta kulttuurista ja uskonno(i)sta.

Florent Nagoba osallistuu elokuussa Ilomantsin Karhu-festivaalille tutustuen suomalaisiin, suomalaiseen kulttuuriin ja luontoon, mutta ennen kaikkea ’karhuun’! Hän oli Villa Karossa ottamassa haasteeseeen tuntua, ja elokuun jälkeen hän palaa Villa Karon residenssiin jakamaan kokemuksiaan ja jatkamaan ja jakamaan työtään ja kokemuksiaan laajemmalle.
In the life of the Finnish-African Cultural Center the first four months of the year 2013 were full of collective waves of inspiration associated with a wide spread of great and positive intentions gathered from a burning desire for creativity. Arrivals and departures of residents started on a very good note in January: Timo Sipola (journalist), Liisa Väisänen (Ph.D) and her husband Marco Peretto (photographer), Risto Lindstedt (journalist) and his wife Päivi Lindstedt, Hannu Lindroos (photographer), Antti Sundberg (musician), Tuukka Vuorinen (musician), Aapo Halonen (musician) and Leena Eilittä (researcher) were those who happily crossed the boundary from year 2012 into 2013 in the premises of Villa Karo.
Among the lucky ones who spent the New Year in Grand-Popo was a group of Estonians led by Triin Toompuu who toured Ghana, Togo and Benin. With arrivals in January through to April, Villa Karo attracted also a lot of external collaborators with resident artists like Tytti Oittinen (film director), Ilpo Jauhiainen (soundscape artist), Dan Henriksson (play writer), Anna Retulainen (painter), Pirkko Kaartinen (writer) and her husband Reijo Mälkiä, Eri Shimatsuka (textile designer) and Nana Oforiatta-Ayim (writer, film maker).
Another event that enlivened the house was a two weeks workshop by ten African artists from Togo, Benin and Nigeria led by Godfrey Okorodus living in Belgium. Grand-Popo’s population is constantly in contact with Villa Karo through direct collaboration with local artists either via collective or personal projects like environmental education and arts in general.
Visitors from all walks of life animated Villa Karo’s activities. A surprise visit from a delegation of Finnish Embassy in Abuja, a group of German tourists, Spanish Architects and Journalist/Correspondent of RFI in Finland, just to mention a few, were welcomed to the center by three charming ladies, Sylvie (chief of programs), Georgette (collection manager) and Taru (CIMO-trainee) omnipresent at their respective posts.
Our weekly film projections and monthly concerts from January to April attracted, as always, young and old folks to the center. Lot of appreciation from the public is always expressed through comments traditionally relayed by school children who visit Villa Karo for various reasons especially just to comment on past events with some critiques related to artists’ performances etc.
To conclude, our beginning of the year has been extremely fruitful with a new mixture of commitments to the cultural world, thanks to artistic qualities of the residents like Dan Henriksson, Tytti Oittinen, Ilpo Jauhiainen and many others!

Tällä ja ensi viikolla tapahtuu Villa Karon henkilökunnassa monenlaisia muutoksia: Miikka Pörsti ja Linnea Olamo vaihtoivat tällä viikolla paikkaa Villa Karon ystävät ry:n toiminnanjohtajana. Maikki Salmivaara ja Taru Itälinna puolestaan tekevät vuoronvaihdoksen Beninin päässä ensi viikolla.
Suurimmat kiitokset Miikalle viimeisistä kahdesta ja puolesta vuodesta Villa Karon jäsenenä ja johdossa! Ja samaten Maikille työstä, linkkiydestä ja Suomen vahvistuksena toimimisesta Beninissä! Tarulle ja Linnille puolestaan tervetuloa – ja tervetuloa takaisin Linni!

The staff of Villa Karo is going through some changes both here in Finland and in Benin during this and next week. Miikka Pörsti and Linnea Olamo changed places, as Linni became the new executive director of Villa Karo’s Friends. And Maikki Salmivaara and Taru Itälinna are making a ”changing of the guards” in Benin next week after Taru has arrived to Grand-Popo.
We thank Miikka warmly and humbly for his work for Villa Karo during these last couple of years! And thank you, Maikki, for your wonderful work in Benin! Taru and Linni, welcome – and welcome back!
